Why do people work?

Sustenance, passing of time/occupying their time, fulfilment of philosophical goals, social norms.

I remember a lady I once worked with she told me treat your job like your hobby, then the stress related to it will reduce. I agree with her in principle. However ,what happens when one treats their workplace as a place of social interaction to the point where it's inappropriate.

For example, is water cooler talk for an hour appropriate? How about chatting for the said hour in front of a colleague's work station? Is that appropriate as well?
